definitely a Vietnam pilot
I was at Cranado Island, San Diego at the NAVAIR base, and watched a Chinook skimming just over the water with the back door opened, and watched Navy Seals sliding out in boats and immediately speeding away. Training exercise was awesome too see!

My favorite is the chinook pilot that parked the backend on a hillside rooftop while the wounded were loaded and the front end was just suspended in air
I flew a lot with Vietnam vet pilots during construction on trans Alaska pipeline. Those guys were great. They thought the job was great since no one was shooting at them.

that's a pretty basic drop and go. it's the the most time effective way of turning away from the face of the mountain. he needs to trun around but the tail rotars have no space without hitting rock. time matters in the air. fuel runs out you aren't pushing to a gas station you fall to death.
I have friends in the Vietnam war that said they were the best pilots in the war!! They could do anything with the Huey! If you need help, they’ll land it on top of you!

judging by the age of the video and the machinery probably is a Vietnam vet but we've all seen the videos those guys that have been fighting in the mountains do a damn good job too! God bless all of our warriors
Helicopter pilots are outstanding.
There currently are specialized helicopter units that closely train and operate with Delta, Green Berets, Recon Marines, Rangers and Navy Seals et al and all can perform amazing maneuvers with their helicopters. Viet Nam era Huey pilots started the practice.
If you stay aware of your surroundings you are good.

I saw a video of a helicopter pilot filming a surfer years ago. There was a once in a lifetime super wave that the surfer was riding. The wave was huge and the pilot was up in the curl next to the surfer. They were coming out of it together. I don't think I have ever seen so much skill before, from both of them.

Even with the theatrical take off, the nerd in me says the up draft & wind flow actually make that exit the most efficient & perhaps the safest way to descend quickly down the mountain.
