That stanchion isn't near capable of providing rigid support because a 5 year old could walk over to that log and push and knock it over. Apparently there are lag bolts driven into lead anchors that will tear out easy on a side load.

this is most likely a support column for timber framing so once connected to the other parts of the structure it will not shift at the base
