At 55 I had two officers on our porch to tell me my youngest brother had passed from a fatal heart attach while he was driving. He was 45. That news never comes easy.

I was home with my younger sister at 12 years old.The phone rang at 3 am and my parents were not home.It was from the hospital.I asked if someone was dead. They had to figure it out and said yes.

I remember when my sister left us. I texted everybody & everyone of them called me. @ the time I drove Greyhound. I was in NYC. When I got the news I was standing in the Port Authority. I lost it. Supervisor put me on a bus to go home Va Beach Va. That was the longest ride of my life. It was 4 AM & I'm texting people, nobody believed me.
When my brother passed, I was notified by phone from the Chaplin for the JPD, at approximately 2:30 in the morning. Our mother was spending the night with me in Weir KS. I’ve often wondered if they would have notified her the same way, had she been at home in Joplin at the time.

I've had to deliver the same news a few years back. It was the most gut wrenching experience...

Never an easy situation...in England, they usually try to have a female officer, present. Who immediately makes a strong cup of tea with plenty of sugar...helps with the shock...so sad...🙏🙏

same thing happened when my younger brother and his best friend were attacked with knives in a local park. His friend died in his arms and he then crawled out of the park several fields down. He didn't come home on time which was very unusual. Before he got home, the local police called us to say that one of the three boys was dead, not identifying my brother or his 2 buddies. My Dad had to go to the police station not knowing the outcome. My mother, younger brother and I watched the length of our street to see where the police were going to stop. Sadly it was the home of his best friend. it was as if the police had come to us. it's been over 50 years but the stinging memory of that night is still in my heart. No family should ever have to experience this horror.
