I think that there wouldn't be enough gold removed from one ring to make it worth the customers time to keep. Bear in mind, that not all gold is the same quality in jewelry. I don't think there is anything wrong with the jeweler keeping shavings. Wood chips are worth alittle money too, sold in Walmart. But when somebody has a tree "re-sized", they don't want the chips from the chipper dumped in their yard. Some tree removal companies sell the chips to the people who clean and bag the chips to sell to places like Walmart.
