The architect must have been a relative of the architect who built the Winchester Mystery House 😆

Maybe a folding ladder of some sort, like for attics.

I love it to store away the once a year Christmas decorations.

Just add a 2x6 to the right wall with 3/4 plywood make a hinged deck even with the other rail that just folds up vertical against wall and up to use stairs. even add a support post that folds out to support the center as it folds down. be like $50 fix

Be careful standing in the middle of that! It might become a gravity Driven elevator to the floor below without notice. 😆

Not sure about y'all, but this is the dumbest shit I've ever seen in a home and I've seen a lot of dumb shit doing remodels.

perhaps you could remove the door and put one of those folding ladders like they put in garages so it can fold out onto the steps so you can use it easier

Install a small pull-down ladder (like attics have). And shame the questionable "builder". 😂

That’s a great use of space for storage especially for seasonal items. Add a pull down ladder or flooring too extend and add even more storage…and it’s functional.

Guess they shouldn't have installed the stairs there after construction. Somebody musta really not like going outside to access the basement.

I'd build a thing that'd fold down that you could just walk on. Fold it back against the wall when not in use.
