It is very dull and very green wood. Also cutting in line of where a large branch met the trunk. The grain is very tight.

well first off it's helpful if you can at least hit the same spot twice. but also know how to read the wood. he's splitting straight into a big knot. work the edges of the knot. til the knot is the last piece and burnable. absolutely nothing wrong with that maul. pure operator error there.
