They make a painters tape that does that without the stupidity.

It works if you use quality tape and make sure it’s bonded
The lines are not straight because the wall is textured. And that’s compounded for the ppl asking lol.
It’s called caulk taping. You just run caulk over your textured walls so it seals and crates a straight finish when done
