They may have shown up "unannounced", but Ellis Island, less than a mile and a half away from Manhattan, is where east coast arrivals were processed. At the very least, they made sure that no one arrived sick. That's more than could be said for anyone crossing the border in the middle of the night during Covid. Has anyone else notices an uptick in measles and polio, diseases that the US has vaccinated for over half a century and almost eradicated if it weren't for open borders.

in the late 1800s, immigrants were vetted and checked into ports of entry. My immigrant great grandparents entered the country on immigrant ships through the port of entry at Ellis Island where they followed all rules and regulations.

Back when her great grandparents came to the US, the laws were different. Until the late 19th century there was no formal process for immigration. It was pretty much buy a ticket and head for Ellis Island. That’s how my great grandparents and probably hers immigrated.

I don't believe her ancestors came illegally. Coming on a boat meant they probably processed through Ellis Island and were accepted into the country legally. Those denied entry were immediately returned. My ancestors came from Germany and France that way.

It’s not legal to enter illegally. But the way they are being treated should be illegal. The truth is no one is being deported…to their own countries. They are being sent to prison systems in order to to line the pockets of the billionaires that have stock in the prison system. AND the American taxpayers are paying for the injustice. This adds to our already sky high debt. It would make more sense to actually deport those who were dangerous and have the ones who were not actually deported and/or pay to stay. Many of them already work and pay taxes. Now, the tax revenue disappeared along with the taxpaying immigrants.
