He knows the lioness is in heat. He wants to go fight the other lion to keep him away but he doesn't want to go too far away from the lioness because she might leave. When a lioness is in heat the male won't let her out of his sight until she lets him mate.

cap. if the male is around then their is most def at least another 8 to 12 females other than the one in frame hanging around. that other make lions that's not part of the pride would have been met with force. makes usually fight against other males in the pride before coming of age to practice taking over a pride. rather it be their own or another. but I've never scene them just run in guns blazing. I've scene them single out the male when he is out checking the territory. or sneak in and kill cubs and a few females to take over in the makes absence. but never a face to face with the pride around
