I did a little digging to see what I could find out as to why you should do this and it said it does nothing! Ur supposed to put a coin on Top of the FROZENwater-filled cup/dish. If the power goes out while ur gone and the freezer has been off too long, the coin will drop thru the water as it thaw. That will let u know... Don't eat any food in that freezer!

You are supposed to freeze a dish of water , put quarter on top and back in freezer. When you get back, if the quarter is not loose on top of the ice then you had a power outage while you were gone

Freeze a cup or bowl of water... place a quarter on top of frozen water. When away, if your freezer goes out or your power goes out, the quarter will sink to the bottom and you will know you had a power outage. not sure what putting the key in the bottom of a bowl of coke will show.
