it works both ways just because your walking doesn't mean not to look out same for car but if you walk behind them and hear the motor crank you can assume they are about to ba k up I usually wait and let them know its clear
You shouldn't walk that close behind vehicles in the parking lot if so pay attention to back up lights. I'm hard of hearing and can't hear engines so I do this naturally. I recommend it for hearing people too.

I had woman and her kid stop behind me the moment I started my truck. the kid started tieing their shoe and the moment stepped right up to my truck to make sure I didnt move. I would never try to run over a kid, but I think the mom should have simply made her kid tie their shoe somewhere vehicles where not trying to move. the guy in this video just wanted to start something. truck was not even close to hitting them creeping back at half a mph.
