We used to use "Sun-In," a hair lightener spray containing lemon juice.

Lemon juice can be used to lighten hair by combining it with sun exposure, but it is not a replacement for chemical bleach and can cause dryness and damage. The citric acid in lemon juice reacts with UV rays to break down the hair's pigment, resulting in subtle lightening, especially on naturally lighter hair. Darker hair may develop unwanted brassy tones. To mitigate damage, mix lemon juice with a moisturizing oil like olive or coconut oil and always follow up with conditioner.
