Every timing pulley has a flange on the outer edge making this trick impossible. Seems like a good idea, but it won’t work.
I have seen some timing pulleys that doesn't have a lip but if you're belt breaks going down the road that's another story and hope you don't have an interference motor
....and a really good way to cut the shit out of your fingers. I mean, don't you want to put that blade in the holder? For the uninitiated. Not us.
or zip tie them through the gear holes then take the belt off.

There's also slots in those cams to hold a straight edge to keep the cams from rolling.
