UTIs can cause odd behavior but she acted more like dementia. Night time is the hardest for those with dementia. My husband's Grandmother had Dementia and she would do through her neighbor's garbage cans, wander around always searching. This was before much was known about it and before the internet. She was admitted to a nursing facility where she was always trying to escape. She became mean and aggressive. it was scary and they had no choice but to sedate her and use Haldol. My Mother In Law had Parkinsons and dementia. She just saw circus animals in the corn field across the road or cried, especially at night. Very sad and I'm sure this lady had a form of it too.

some of you people don't understand police have seconds to decide a threat. She called and said she thought someone was by her gate. How were they supposed to know there wasn't an intruder behind the door? Her behavior was odd & suspicious the entire time.

As a psychiatric geriatric RN of 34 yrs, I have to say that the officer handled this poorly. Back away and "Do you want us to come inside and check your house? Is anyone else in the house with you?" Go around to the back of the house where she said she heard someone at the wall, the gate. Police have been trained to handle paranoid persons as well as demented persons. If he couldn't see that she was mentally ill, then he did not need to be working this call. This could have been avoided. I have been injured quite a feww times on geropsych wards without killing my patient. You take down the patient and medicate. I hope another person(s) is not in the home stabbed to death. How long was she living there without proper supervision. So sad.

Anyone with common sense would tell she had dementia. She was disoriented and why would an old disoriented woman be a threat that needed a gun.

She was hiding a knife and attempted to stab the officer and btw the officer was very nice appropriate. Stop judging and learn what these officers have to deal with every day.

It's's so sad ... I don't know if he'd stepped back possibly he could have tazed or maced her. All calls are different and police or any one i.e. paramedics put their life at risk each time you answer a call. So sorry she had this happen to her. Safety first. 😕🙏

He didnt have to shoot her. He's not close enough to get stabbed. She's old and slow. He could have just stepped back. Pepper spray or a taser would have worked just fine.😳

Well she did but from where he’s standing and she’s behind her door, nothing on earth should have happened to this old lady, they do have tsars in my wonderful mind if they shot her they committed murder period her getting shot is not justified.

I think it's sad that the cop felt so threatened by this elderly woman the only result he saw was shooting her....

avator
Megan Conahan
Fort Collins, CO · 2 months ago

She must have called the cops because she said she heard something from outside the wall by the gate. I think that’s the reason why she originally had a knife in her hand. When she answered the door, I think she was suspicious if they were really cops or if they were what she was hearing which she felt was a threat. Or her dementia got her confused from the time she felt threatened and the time the cops showed up and got confused and stabbed the cop thinking it was the threat she heard. Just guessing? Dementia is wild!

No, he had a lot of time to take control. Because she tried to let him leave and he kept pushing into the house. she had not broken any laws so he should not have been forcing himself in her house. you can see she was obviously off.

she had nothing but a damn fist made. so sad to see this video and why the hell would he use a gun, as opposed to maybe a taser gun or something non lethal. But still effective. He had a choice when he arrived on seen after obviously dealing with elderly oldtimers. Isn't takers on his person, just like his gun?

in all reality, as an x officer , they are young she is old they are fast she is slow. they were close enough to take it away if trained. and at the same time they were far enough away to get away from anything she could do. and it's not hard to Identify a gun from a knife no matter what the finish. I'm not arguing the legality I'm arguing the morality of their action. My point being just because it's legal to kill someone doesn't mean you should.

They came into her house-keeping her door open. She obviously is having a mental issue, or dementia and very confused & scared. There was absolutely no reason to kill her/shoot her,… they can easily overtake her. There is at least 2 cops there. She’s protecting herself, with a man and cop scaring her, protecting her house & self. I can’t stand cops not using their heads, as to human behavior. They should just have tased or pepper sprayed her. No ready to shoot her.

She was holding the knife because she thought therwas someone down by her wall. If the cop thought she was holding a weapon, he should have said he would look for someone down by her wall and close the door. He badgered her to show him the knife. What for? Just so he could be bossy and shoot her? What a coward.

she is old. she could have Alzheimer's/Dementia. They see and hear things that are not real. They could use a tazer. A grown man can over power an old lady. You don't always have to shoot to kill. My dad was a police officer for over 30 years. He never shot anyone. My mom had dementia and she sees crazy scary stuff all the time. she always wanted to call the police. Thank God she lives with me so, I can make sure she doesn't get the phone and call them. Prayers for this ladies family if they killed her. 🙏🙏

When he saw she strangely kept her hand behind herself, the policeman should have taken a step or two back away from her... There is a big difference between a knife and a gun.....the ppropriare distance could have saved her life...perhaps she was just afraid and/or had dementia . sad ending for this lady !

Shame on all of you that are saying what he should have done. You weren’t there, you don’t know what you would have done in that exact situation. You may think you know but you don’t, not until it happens to you. Do you really think that the officer wanted to shoot that lady? Of course not, he did what he had to do in the split second he had to make the choice. It’s a sad situation, but you’re only making it worse when you speculate and judge.

She was in her own home. Sad that officers were aggressive. Sad that woman was scary to officer. Simply just an accident. Two many things for a positive outcome. Anyone have any credible ideas?? Assuming it’s a well check?? He should not have asked what was in her hand. Just kept an eye on that hand.
