some of you people don't understand police have seconds to decide a threat. She called and said she thought someone was by her gate. How were they supposed to know there wasn't an intruder behind the door? Her behavior was odd & suspicious the entire time.

You people on this site have😏🥺way too much time 🤔on your hands. This🙃was🥺a sad and tragic event....but anyone coming at you with any kind of weapon...you have the right to defend yourself...maybe pepper spray might have been a better choice... but we are not judge and jury here ...get a grip people .....we don't know what WE WOULD DO UNDER THE CIRCUMSTANCES...🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔

So, in the end, what did she have in her hand?🤔

She tried to close the door. The cops should've let her close her door, left her and checked over by her gate as they were leaving to make sure nothing was over there. They could've told her they'd check & then leave instead of pushing & pushing about what might be behind her back in her hand.

If you're there to help how is killing that person helping retreat and get someone capable of dealing with the situation to help.Stop killing people you are supposed to help.

Who is stupid enough to pull a gun on a cop. At her age, she should have known better.

Anyone with common sense would tell she had dementia. She was disoriented and why would an old disoriented woman be a threat that needed a gun.

Put yourself in cops shoes. They have a split second to make a decision. She could have shot him. It's sad, but he made the right decision.

After reading all the comments there are a few, clearcut facts - The officer was responding to a 911 call. I couldn't tell if Janet, the woman at the door, was the elder who had, after being denied a licence renewal, fired 2 shots into the ground, after a nephew refused to give her her car keys. Only 1 comment about this so not sure if it was a side bar comment or not. Janet was acting in a way that could easily have been a hostage situation. The person by the gate could have been a story to get him to leave because an intruder could very well have been behind the door with a gun pointed at her, telling her to get rid of the officer so he could do whatever he was there to do. The lights were off, supporting the possible gunman scenario, so the officer persisted to try to assess, as he's been trained to do, if she was in danger. She may have been having a paranoid delusional where she saw the officer as the 'somebody at the front wall' and she was ready to defend herself. Continue -

In order for the police to be there in the first place someone with concern for her had to have called in for a well check. The officers knew something wasn’t right with her. They were not aggressive with her they were trying to help her. It could have been any one of the scenarios mentioned in the comments. To those critics of the officers saying they should have walked away and left her alone. You would have been the first ones screaming had they walked away and they found her hours or days later hurt or worse that they shouldn’t have left and they should have done more. What happened on that day was tragic for all involved. These officers risk their lives everyday going on these calls not knowing what they maybe walking into. It’s easy for us to say what they should have done standing on the sidelines. Put yourself in their shoes and I mean really put yourself right in that exact moment..in that split second when she lunged at them. If it were you what would you have done?

That was really unnecessary. The police then should not have persisted. They can tell the women is not well. They needed to leave and not shoot her. This is awful police work.

Whether she had a mental problem or dementia, she had a knife and was gonna stab the police officer. He had every right to shoot her.

I don't understand what actually happened before she was shot. Why were the police there? Was she holding something or maybe she wanted them to shoot her, like suicide by cop? Did she really call police? I'm just curious.

that's some fukd up bs man that poor lady probably didn't have anything that would have hurt anyone and even so why tf do the cops shoot first??!! they could have easily maced or tased her. SOMETHING HAS TO CHANGE WITH THESE FREAKING COPS GOING FOR THE GUN REGARDLESS THE SITUATION!! THEN WONDER WTF EVERYONE HATES THE POLICE! I HOPE THAT OFFICER GETS FIRED AND CHARGED!! WHY ISN'T ANYONE TALKING ABOUT THIS?? OR CAUSING SOME KIND OF CHAOS?? I'M NOT RACIST BUT IF SHE WAS BLACK HELL WOULD HAVE BROKE LOOSE. PLEASE TELL ME THAT OFFICER WAS CHARGED! SO TERRIBLELY SAD

🤔 come on I do not agree they didn’t have to shoot her. There’s two cops they could have grabbed her and put her down onto the ground….. yes, I understand they were concerned of their lives, but as they could see the old Lady was not right….🥺🥺 it’s sad…. I could just imagine her kids….. hearing what happened to her….🥲

I’m sure she has dementia. I went through this with my mom who had dementia and died at age 90. She hallucinated and thought everyone was after her. She would carry a hammer and I got hit in the shoulder with. I had to hide it along with knives or anything else that she could use as a weapon. Her doctor wouldn’t listen to me that she was a danger to herself. This lady sounds like the way my mom was. I was exhausted all the time but I would care for her all over again if I could . She is so missed. She was hospitalized after she fell one day and the doctors wouldn’t let me take her home because she was a danger to herself. The doctors had me put her in a home with a 24 hour caretaker for dementia patients. I visited her there about 5 times a week. When she passed I sat with her for four hours before the coroner came and I had a hard time letting go. This woman is a lot like my mom was.

I think he was wrong. He should of walked away he was too close to her as we saw. I think she panicked because she didn't want to get in trouble he could of called for back up and they could of negotiated with her at least maybe there would of been safer. That's just my opinion. 💁

Can't tell me he was not able to back away from her so he wouldn't get stabbed. He took advantage of the fact she pulled a knife on him so it gives him the right to take her life. Her mind was probably plagued with dementia unable to the clearly. More cops than not really have no business being cops.

This has nothing to do with her, but a question about police. Son is angry with his mother, who is 60 years old. she was in the bathroom with a knife to cut tip off plastic hair dye top. The only thing she had to cut with. He calls police saying she is going to kill herself. She never said that. The police came banging on the door and yelling Open the door now.""" Again, dying her hair, no shirt on only bra with towel wrapped around her, asking where the knife was. She said in the bathroom . They handcuffed her, her towel dropped, so now standing in front of four male police officers in her bra. As she has arthritis in shoulders and tendinitis in her wrist, she told them her shoulder and wrist hurt. They said just go take a seat. Failed to mention she suffers from ptsd, anxiety, and depression. They told her she could go to the hospital willingly or be 302d.Was that forceful?
