Anyone with common sense would tell she had dementia. She was disoriented and why would an old disoriented woman be a threat that needed a gun.

some of you people don't understand police have seconds to decide a threat. She called and said she thought someone was by her gate. How were they supposed to know there wasn't an intruder behind the door? Her behavior was odd & suspicious the entire time.

You people on this site have😏🥺way too much time 🤔on your hands. This🙃was🥺a sad and tragic event....but anyone coming at you with any kind of weapon...you have the right to defend yourself...maybe pepper spray might have been a better choice... but we are not judge and jury here ...get a grip people .....we don't know what WE WOULD DO UNDER THE CIRCUMSTANCES...🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔

He didnt have to shoot her. He's not close enough to get stabbed. She's old and slow. He could have just stepped back. Pepper spray or a taser would have worked just fine.😳

UTIs can cause odd behavior but she acted more like dementia. Night time is the hardest for those with dementia. My husband's Grandmother had Dementia and she would do through her neighbor's garbage cans, wander around always searching. This was before much was known about it and before the internet. She was admitted to a nursing facility where she was always trying to escape. She became mean and aggressive. it was scary and they had no choice but to sedate her and use Haldol. My Mother In Law had Parkinsons and dementia. She just saw circus animals in the corn field across the road or cried, especially at night. Very sad and I'm sure this lady had a form of it too.

moral of the story don't pretend like you're holding a gun behind your back and you won't get shot.

That doesn’t matter he has no right to push that door open. She has every right to have a firearm or a weapon inside her home.

As a psychiatric geriatric RN of 34 yrs, I have to say that the officer handled this poorly. Back away and "Do you want us to come inside and check your house? Is anyone else in the house with you?" Go around to the back of the house where she said she heard someone at the wall, the gate. Police have been trained to handle paranoid persons as well as demented persons. If he couldn't see that she was mentally ill, then he did not need to be working this call. This could have been avoided. I have been injured quite a feww times on geropsych wards without killing my patient. You take down the patient and medicate. I hope another person(s) is not in the home stabbed to death. How long was she living there without proper supervision. So sad.

What is wrong here? 1. It appears she called regarding by the was near the gate. 2. She wasn't ask for any more help. 3. She had no duty to turn on more light. 4. It was easy to see in the house. 5.She had no duty to go into the cold. 6. She made no indication she needed more help. I support the blue but not in this situation. They should have checked the wall by the gate, reported back to her and then left.

I'm never going to my door without a gun in my hand. home invasions have gotten too common. crackheads are everywhere it doesn't matter where you live. haven't people seen enough of these videos to know that you don't ever open your door to the police unless they have a warrant? this will open the door and died for it

well she was obviously scared of an intruder as to why she called ! she being a scared old lady by herself probably has a weapon to protect herself ! instead of the cop investigating for a suspect in the area that he felt the need to investigate her and try and push her door back open when she wanted to shut it Which she has a right to do ! he made her react while already being in a scared state and probably wasn't too sure about the officer being legit after he was trying to enter her home ! it's pretty sad when you call the cops and they aren't worried about investigating what she was concerned about and more about investigating her ! losing her life as a result ! he has no right to keep her from shutting the door ! she had already stated she was cold ! why would she want to go investigate a possible dangerous situation with them ?

The officer was not aggressive at all! He was very polite and concerned. I would have asked the same thing about what was behind her back and to show me where the commotion was at. As for the lights why not turn the lights on. I don't believe for one second the officer isn't feeling horrible of what happened here. I am certain if he had wrestled her down the officer would still get backlash. If you are in law enforcement you are damned if you do and damned if you don't!

I've seen a lot and have learned that age does not matter. Neither does the fact It's a female and male or color for that matter. He asked her what was behind her back. She did not show him she acted shady from the Gecko, she had to do and show him she had a knife to defend herself, drop it, turn the light on and find sad to say, but she calls this to happen. The officer had to react and not split second. Where do I have a family? They have to go Home.To as well and Sometimes we've seen to forget that sounds that happened , so you can't really blame me him

The lady suffered from dementia, I believe in her mind something switched and she thought the officer was the intruder. I don't believe for one minute that she would have tried to purposely hurt the officer if she had been in her right mind.

had a old neighbor that had dementia he was in good shape .. his daughter-in-law called me 1 day and asked if I could go up to his house and check on him and I knocked on the door nobody answered finally he answers and he basically did the same thing that this woman's doing and I kept asking him if he was okay and he was just acting weird well next thing When I went to put my hand on the door to talk to him he lunges forward at me with a knife and I knocking it out of his hand and we fell to the ground I kicked the knife away and just held him there and then called the sister inlaw.. I didn't want the old man to go to jail so that's as far as it ever went but they ended up Putting him in a home because the dementia got so bad.. I wish this lady had a chance instead of being shot but I can't say the officer wrong or right I wasn't there
