Because anything going straight up would just fall straight back down.You have to go 18000 miles an hour around the Earth.If you wish to stay up

Because that’s how alot of them fly unless it’s an inter continental ballistic weapon that goes way up hi first, look it up ,,, they have 1000s of different weapons/ missels , som fly sideways some fly in an arc

They’re going into either a low earth orbit like Starlink satellites, which went up this evening from Vanderberg SFB, or into a geosynchronous orbit. Either way they start vertically and transition into a trajectory parallel with the earth surface.
