What I think we are seeing here is an action that is routinely done to save fish's lives....... it's called venting. When you catch a fish or sea dwelling creatures such as this, which is a squid of some sort, and then you reel them up fast, they can get what is called barotrauma which is air trapped in their swim bladders which oftentimes causes injury or death. Barotrauma is essentially what divers get when they get the "bends". To expel the air from their swim bladders, a pointed object is used to pierce the swim ladder allowing the fish to descend once again and essentially saving its life. And no.... when done properly, it is a very effective way of saving fish and these creatures' lives.

But I don't know what I am seeing. But I have watched a lot of nature shows where they catch and tag to monitor the wildlife and fish. Hopefully that is what it is. I dont each that stuff, but only because I am squeamish, but I am not against others from eating it. God put them on this earth to feed us. I love to fish, catch and release.
