My father did this in the army (ordinance) back 1950s @ Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. Their vehicles always had RED fenders for ordinance. He was also stationed in Indian Head, Maryland, or White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico. Love being an Army brat.
