On August 10th, 2018, 28-year-old Richard "Beebo" Russell, a ground service agent with Horizon Air, stole a Q400 plane from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. Though he had no formal pilot training, Russell took off successfully, performing aerial stunts including a barrel roll over Puget Sound before crashing into the wooded Ketron Island. Russell had worked at Horizon Air for over three years. Before that, he was a bakery owner, a Christian youth mentor, and a college athlete. Friends and family described him as kind and reliable, with no prior criminal history. In his final conversations with air traffic control, Russell apologized, saying, "I'm just that broken guy." His death was ruled a suicide.
