Real. I looked it up. Fiberglass is made of very thin, hair-like strands of glass. Over time and due to exposure to high temperatures and vibrations, the fiberglass packing can discolor and break down. As the fiberglass degrades, it can escape the muffler and be pushed out of the tailpipe in strands or clumps that resemble hair or fibrous dust. It's a sign that your muffler is failing and may need to be replaced soon.
