You know, what about this idea. like those automatic cutoffs on treadmills, devise a waterproof killswitch to attach to you life vest, so if this happened, while on another boat or in the water, press the kill switch and shut the motor down on the runaway. sort of like the ones for, "I have fallen, and I can't get up." would be inexpensive to make I am sure, and would come in handy for this dangerous situation.
