That should be the standard practice for school bus drivers.
Well while it's seems like the safest thing to do it's actually illegal.
Being a school bus driverI can see why this looks like a great idea, but I also see how this creates other safety issues. For example if a car coming towards the bus head on doesn’t see the bus they will possibly swerve to the left and hit all kids at the stop. Also the bus is now more likely to get hit since it’s in 2 lanes which would make matters really bad for the ones loading and already on the bus. And no driver should make unapproved changes to laws and policies. I’m not saying that is the case tho..

I do I've had that happen to me what he's preventing somebody passing on either side when you drive a school bus you have to watch everything I've had the snatch kids back in the door red lights yellow lights flashing they don't pay no attention stop signing out texting on the phone don't pay attention or don't give a s*** now they got cameras back in front and they get a picture of the car before it was up to the driver he had to get the tag number and turn it in then that person say well somebody was using my car it wasn't me but no proof but now it's got camera can't prove it then I'm going to get old days drove the short bus haha
It’s actually against the law in all states to do this. If an officer wanted to he could ticket them.
I think that is really smart. Anyone against it would have to have a real good reason. Traffic isn’t supposed to be moving in either direction while the bus is picking up or discharging students!🤔
Should there be an incident involving another vehicle or bus passenger the liability falls on driver and school district for this Illegal traffic violation.

Very smart... People are blowing past these school buses putting children in danger. People don't even slow down around school buses anymore. At least this way they'll have to stop!!!
It is not the drivers job to play policeman to traffic. Mostly all school buses are equipped with cameras to record violations of the other drivers. Emergency vehicles have to get through and not have to wait for the bus to move out of the way. This move is illegal.

I was a school bus driver for 14 years. I always did this. A State Trooper told me this was illegal, guess what? I still did it until I retired. No one could ever tell me…they didn’t see me.
that bus is breaking the law for one. it's stopping all emergency vehicles that could possibly be on the roadway. if I was a cop I'd give that school bus driver a ticket for crossing a double yellow line

My Wife drove for 26 years and multiple times had the lights flashing, door opened and just before a young girl was about to step off the last step, My Wife saw a car passing on the right so lunged and grabbed the girls backpack and pulled her back. Would have killed the child. She also had to disarm a middle school student with a gun. She simply demanded the gun several times and the student denied having one, So the 3rd time she called him by name and firmly demanded the gun at that he pulled from under his backpack and gave to her. She was praised by the head of ODE, and the district superintendent.
