chickens and upland game birds are similar in regards to the hardiness towards weather conditions. They can handle cold pretty well, but they definitely need a dry place to roost. The ability to get out of the wind goes a long way, too. I remember quite a few people in Montana when I was growing up that really didn't have a shelter for their chickens. Lilac bushes held chickens, ducks, and geese. It wasn't a big deal back then. Now it's unheard of. That's a good thing, but they are definitely cold-hardy.
