we have white one here in our little town in western North Carolina..it's funny because they pretty much stay in our little town ,we have a white squirrel festival every year..someone brought one here as a pet it got loose and starting breeding with our Grey's and now we have white with Grey stripes and solids nature is a beautiful thing..

Here's a fun fact: their dark coat gets warmer than grey ones, so they survive cold well.

I was born and raised in the Bronx, NY. From birth until HS I lived in the north eastern section - on the shores of the Long Island sound we had endless seagulls and daily visits from swans and their ducklings (swanlings-lol) and grey squirrels in lesser numbers. We moved to an area north west, not 2 miles away - a beautiful area but not waterfront. (!?!!) no swans in our back yard, no seagulls, no horseshoe crabs, NO Grey Squirrels. There were/are Black and big fluffy tailed RED and strawberry Blonde squirrels! I had never seen / noticed them before! Not only were they unique they were shockingly urbanized-boldly approaching looking for a handout. Snacking on cashews I shared a few. Creating best friends without boundaries. I named my closest friends Blackie, Ginger, Coal, Goldie, Vester (his fur shaded like a vest) generations later- I feed them every day only now i serve Peanut butter sandwiches- they sit upright, use both “hands”. Crumbs are cleaned up by resident birds❤️

First black squirrel I had ever seen was about 40 years ago in Rochdale Village in Queens New York right off 137th Ave. and then again up in Narrowsburg New York and now this is 40 years later. There’s a bunch of black swirls out there and Narrowsburg don’t get to see a lot of them but you’ll see him and Narrowsburg.

Oh, and I forgot to mention they are beautiful just something about them. They look exactly like the gray ones but they’re just black and they’re beautiful nice and shiny.

I have them on my property in NC. The first time I saw one, I thought it was a skunk.
