The Metropolitan Police Department in Washington, D.C. has faced a shortage of officers, with the number of officers dropping to its lowest point in over two decades, likely starting around 2020. This shortage is attributed to a combination of factors, including a hiring freeze imposed by the DC Council in 2020. According to a DC city council member: “We are now down 800 sworn positions. Our authorized strength is 4,000 sworn officers. We currently have 3,180. So, more than 800 vacancies here on the police department. The way that the department makes up for that shortage is through two million hours of mandatory overtime, which just adds to the burnout and the attrition rate here in the city. This is the main reason we can’t get a handle on crime ourselves.”
