Sounds like negligence on the MRI place, but common sense also isn't so common.... it is a giant magnet. The MRI technician should have never let him in the room.

If the wife knew he had this giant chain on, why did she call him to help? They both seem ignorant of the danger.

Listening is fundamental the tech went and got him and he probably didn’t know that the mri was a magnet. The tech shouldn’t have gotten him they should’ve helped her up themselves when I got mine in Charlotte I asked for my husband and they said no we will assist so you won’t fall.

There are multiple zones near an MRI. You have to be extensively screened before any procedure because the magnet is so powerful. The tech never should’ve let him into the room. Much less with a 20 pound chain with a padlock around his neck. These techs are paid handsomely, in part because of the (potential) risk. Safety is absolutely paramount. Wearing that much metal in proximity was an unnecessary risk.

Why did he go in the room? Maybe if she had kept her mouth shut he would have stayed in the waiting room.

avator

Columbia, SC · 11 days ago

So, after seeing the video footage. It appears that the tech led the man into the room and assisted him in picking his wife up out of the bed. It was during this motion that the man was drawn into the MRI machine. The technician had more than enough opportunity to deactivate the machine by hitting the emergency shutdown device. But the technician did not do this. This incident is solely the fault of the technician for allowing him into a controlled environment and neglecting to engage built-in safe devices that could've saved this man's life.

My condolences to this gentlemans wife and family it’s definitely a devastating thing that happen sorry for your lost . I remember I went to take a MRI and they suppose to tell you to empty out your pockets if you have any type of metal to take it off when I went the tech didn’t say none of that to me I did it myself if I didn’t do it I probably been in the same situation the technicians need to wake up stop being lazy and do they jobs it’s not that hard to make sure nothing happens to anyone and if they don’t like they job go get a new one . Cause they have to do is make sure the patients are good the technicians they don’t do a hard job understand if you have to lift a patient or do anything hard they dont . That’s why it sounds suspect to me cause how the hell they didn’t see his big ass chain knowing he can’t wear any type of metal 🤦🏽‍♂️ this lady better get one those Johnny Cochrans to get those technicians fired and get paid for what they did I know it won’t bring him back

Real gold does not stick to a magnet and that is one of the ways you can tell if it's real or not. but that clasp must have been a master lock🔐

They said this was an open mri I believe. Those machines are built and intended for someone to be in them. That’s what confuses me. Did it suck him in when she was in it as well?? None of this is making any sense. We need someone to do a video and show us exactly how this happened. My head can’t wrap around this story. Prayers for his wife, family, and friends!

Letting any person into the room with jewelry or glasses is a big mistake. Computed Axial Tomography (CAT) scans have been around since the 70’s. That center is liable.

There are normally alarms at the entrance to the MRI area that sound if any metal is detected so that you don't go any further into the room. At least in every facility that my MRIs are done in are set up that way. This was completely avoidable. The technicians always help me up off the table and out of the room to get back to my walker.

He should not have been the person to assist her getting up. Someone needs to be held accountable for the incident. They ask you if you have any jewelry or metal objects on he had no authority to be assisting his wife.

avator
Myrna Barr
Columbia, SC · 13 days ago

There are a few ‘at faults’ in this situation, as tragic as it is: the MRI clinic staff should not have allowed the husband in the room because THEY should’ve been cognizant of the possible outcomes of that chain in the vicinity of a MAGNETIC imagining machine. And the man should have had common sense NOT to wear a twenty pound chain anywhere out in public outside of a gym (because why?), and especially not in a medical clinic!

avator
Bianca

This guy wasn't the patient. He should have never been allowed back in the patient area for any reason. It was the responsibility of the MRI techs to assist her off the table and help her to the waiting area. They catastrophically failed to do their job and maintain patient safety protocol, resulting in the death of the patient's spouse. The trauma of that alone is worth upwards of millions in a settlement, but that still won't bring back her husband. 🥺
