I myself struggled with my racial identity as a kid. I went to all white schools, all my friends were white so I felt I needed to look like them. sadly my mother never corrected me and told me my dark skin and coarse hair was beautiful, my father tried but as a girl I expect my dad to say nice things. It wasn't until I was in college and my hair was short AF because of the relaxers and my skin was fucked up from the lightening creams that I realized I hated myself. I'm 36 now and still struggling to love my black skin and hair
