I too, used to have a dear friend I played with, both aged five, living in MA, our father's in the AF. This happened over 50 years ago, but it still breaks my heart. As best friends, living across the street from one another, we rode our bikes, hunted for wild berries, collected baby snakes and bugs, picked flowers and dug in the dirt. I couldn't have asked for a better friend. Individually, our families sat us down, saying we were getting too close, that our friendship needed to stop, that the playing will stop. This happened because at the end of the day, we started giving a hug upon going in for the night and upon taking walks, we held hands so the other wouldn't get lost. LOL What on earth could five year olds do besides have their innocence stolen and their hearts broken by misguided adults? We cried, unable to play, punished when violating our parents new rules. I still miss my friend to this day and wish him well. A true friendship, born of innocence, destroyed by ignorance. 🙏
