That is downright MEAN of security, she might not have had the money to pay more. She could've left the bag, with security, if they would have HELD it for her, if everything in her bag CLEAR... Have some compassion & give a "warning". SWA in Dallas one time would not let me and my son board bc we were a little late. The plane didn't leave until 30 mins plus!! We missed my nephew's funeral.

The obese don’t ride in the overhead baggage compartments. Some should be required to purchase two seats instead of their spillover into adjacent seats inconveniencing passengers in the seat/s next to them. No paying passenger should be forced to deal with any less space than is already minimal.
The solution would have been to allow her to board and promise to load her bag (duct taped to the belly of the fuselage with no assurance or liability if it fails to reach her destination). You’re welcome Karen.
If items won't fit into your check bag and they need to be put into your carry on try to make sure they are wearable items that your can later on top. I once wore 5 layers on my legs to avoid the weight putting my bag over. Leggings jeans skirt skirt skirt
