B virus B virus (Cercopithecine herpesvirus 1) is a macaque herpesvirus that is usually harmless to monkeys but can cause a severe, often fatal, neurological disease in humans, typically transmitted through bites, scratches, or contact with infected monkey fluids. Symptoms start with flu-like signs and can progress to encephalitis (brain inflammation), leading to respiratory failure and death if not treated immediately with antiviral therapy. Immediate first aid (washing the wound thoroughly) and prompt medical attention are critical after any exposure.
