Any firearms professional knows to check the bore before loading. He's lucky money and humiliation is all that cost him.
Internal ballistics. When the explosion happens inside the barrel 3 things exit the barrel. The first is the hot gases from the powder which travels faster than the projectile, then the projectile and then the unburned powder last. When the rifle recoiled and forced the barrel up the gases exited first and the barrel hit the wood as the projectile was traveling down the barrel but because the barrel struck the wood with the force it did it caused enough barrel over vibration and barrel whip and the bullet got caught inside the barrel and blew out in two directions.

They obviously knew something like that could happen; they yelled "for science everybody". I'm guessing he was shooting a super hot load they knew could over pressure the weapon. What I don't know is why he's not wearing any real protection other than some shooting glasses if he's performing "science" with a Barret 50 BMG rifle. This seems irresponsible to me but I don't know the whole story I'm only speculating.
