when I lived in South Carolina I heard a hell of a racket. I went outside and there were thousands of birds sitting on the ground,tree limbs and power wires! A truck coming up the road scared them, and they all took off at the same time. and it looked a lot like this. To say the least it was very intimidating, I know it scared my German shepherd mix. And yes I thought about Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds!

It is quite common. Bible thumpers are just scared of the unknown and think it's a sign from god. Religion is just a crutch to help scared people feel better about themselves and to blame it on something they or others did.
This happens every year around the early part of September. Flocks of tree swallows stop and roost at a particular island on the Connecticut river. People from the area gather to watch. It's amazing to see.

Once I saw the main flock of geese leaving the Squaw Creek wildlife area, there must have been close to a million birds. They flew over me for 5 minutes 10 levels deep from horizon to horizon.
