If he's an actual Marine, I'd guesstimate his age to be early to mid forties, which means if he was telling the truth about being military, there's a good chance he was in the middle of it in Iraq and/or Afghanistan. Memories people don't want often goes away for a while with blessed alcohol. At least until they hit the bottom of that bottle.
