The real history of how slavery came to America is more complex than most people are taught.Slavery in early colonial America did not begin as a strictly race-based system. In the early 1600s, the colonies relied heavily on indentured servitude, which included Europeans, Africans, and Indigenous people. Many Africans initially arrived under labor contracts and, in some cases, gained freedom, land, and legal standing. Over time especially by the late 1600s colonial elites deliberately changed laws to make slavery permanent, hereditary, and tied to race. This shift was driven by economic interests and a desire to prevent poor Europeans and Africans from uniting against wealthy landowners. The transatlantic slave trade itself was a global system.
