He founded Operation PUSH and the Rainbow Coalition β€” organizations built on the belief that the poor, the overlooked, and the oppressed deserved a seat at the table and a fair shot at the American dream. He ran for President not just to win, but to expand what was possible β€” and he changed the Democratic Party and American politics forever. His family said it best: "Our father was a servant leader β€” not only to our family, but to the oppressed, the voiceless, and the overlooked around the world. His unwavering belief in justice, equality, and love uplifted millions."

In September 2007, Reverend Jackson walked the streets of Jena, Louisiana β€” our Louisiana β€” alongside tens of thousands of marchers who came from across the country to stand up for six young Black men known as the Jena 6. When nooses were hung from a tree at Jena High School and those young men were charged with crimes far exceeding what justice required, the world could have looked away. Jesse Jackson did not look away. He called it what it was β€” a miscarriage of justice β€” and he stood on the front lines demanding that the Department of Justice intervene. He called on the President of the United States to act. He called on all of America to pay attention. And because of his voice, they did. He stood beside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on the balcony of the Lorraine Motel in Memphis the night before Dr. King was taken from us. He carried that torch forward for more than five decades without putting it down.
