we used to go as a family pole net smelting in the river. we would get a couple washtubs full. on the way home we stopped and gave some to our grandparents. Grandma always fried up a bunch of smelt and fried potato and onions on the side. best ever.🌸💕💕

When I was young we would go to the pier on Lake Michigan and dip flat rectangular nets down and immediately pull it up and dump the smelt into a 5-gallon bucket. Now because of pollution and invasive species they are gone🤔.

Absolutely love them growing up in Minnesota. Got them from Lake superior. One year we cleaned a bathtub full of them and froze them in gallon bags and had enough for a whole year. That was the best.🌸💕

according to Google when I asked: its called Hamsi tava Hamsi tava is a popular Turkish dish of crispy, pan-fried anchovies, especially from the Black Sea region, where fresh anchovies (hamsi) are abundant in winter. The small fish are cleaned, lightly coated in cornmeal or flour, arranged in a circular pattern in a pan with oil, and fried until golden and crispy, often served with lemon and a fresh salad.

I'm no expert but that looks dangerous because burns are horrible when it comes to pain.🤨

My Aunt Lillie Mae and Uncle Bill Wheatley used to go smelting in a stream off Lake Michigan. They would scoop smelt and filled 10 large aluminum garbage cans. We would get two cans. They would come over two Fridays a month and I would fry smelt and french fries. Preferred smelt over venison. They lasted til late spring. Loved cleaning them, adding flour in a bag and freezing in quart freezer bags. Filled a freezer. I was 7-12 years old.🥰

Looks like Smelt. We used to dip smelt when I was a kid. It’s delicious! If you fry it perfectly you can eat it bones and all. 🥰

If'm 84. in s pring Smelt ran in Lake Huron durning the 40s thru 1985 . Because of greedy fishermen, netting (dipping) 50 gal. tubs 3,4 a person sometimes. they depleted the smelt. It was fun going out at midnight sometimes or when ever the were "running" with long handled nets or some extremely imagined ways of getting smelt out of the mouth of theAuSable River and Lake Huron . Now you'd be lucky to get a bucket full. 💕
