C4 is not 3x m ore effective than TNT. I am American Army Combat Engineer. When calculating explosive charges, a factor called the R.E.(relative effectiveness) factor is part of the calculation. TNT is the base unit and has an effectiveness factor of 1.00. in contrast PETN, another plastique explosive, rates 1.29-1.34. C4 rates 1.41. so for every 141 pounds of TNT, you could use 100 pounds of C4. by the way... you can light C4 on fire and the oils in it will burn, but it will not explode. basic concept in explosives...Heat + compression equals detonation. it's why you could theoretically mold C4 into a ball and play baseball with it...
isn't it, you can set it on fire and it will burn. But if its burning and you hit it with a hammer, it will explode.
