Farmers were paying illegals under the table just to save their bottom dollar by not having to pay payroll tax. Last I checked federal payroll tax was 3%. Let鈥檚 say you have 15 farmhands. You鈥檙e paying each of them $15/hour to work the fields. The average farmhand works 60-70 hours a week. Thats 2550 bi-weekly before tax. So 5100 for the month at 3% payroll tax is $153 out of your pocket times 15 employees is $2295 a month the farmer should pay in payroll taxes. Prosecute the farmers for undermining the tax code.
