This is true about the middle child. They have to work the hardest and pay the most and parents treat them the worst! I had to leave home to let my parents know I had no intention of staying home and being their cook, housekeeper, and nurse! They really did not want me to have a life!

It is shitty to charge your kids rent. You decided to have them, it is your responsibility to cover their housing until they move out. Unless you are saving that money for them to give it back when they buy a house.

I charged my step son rent but it wasn't to pay bills or anything. I got a high yielding savings account and started depositing it in there every month until his 18th birthday. He had enough to enjoy a really great senior trip, get a new car for college and kept the rest in savings. When he was 24 he used it for a down payment on a new condo. 👍
my mom told me to start paying rent, I said sure... pay me for all the chores I do, mind you I never once had an allowance. and then it was either pay rent or do the work around all the property, I never ended up paying rent... chores or rent not both.

We all paid the same amount. Once we graduated from school/college and started working our parents advised we did not haven't move out, but we had to pay R&B and still do our regular chores. $200 monthly. I was able to save a lot of money living at home. Stayed until I married at 28.
