yall talking about "until the truck brakes suddenly" as if this isn't a major highway with plenty of space. nobody should be braking at all 🤦‍♀️ theres no traffic

It’s called drafting. It’s dangerous but if you are very low on fuel, it does save you some miles.

our dad did that to get up hill when we were running low on gas.

Years ago on a trip to Boston on I84 I pulled into an eastbound weigh station. The fog was heavy and thick. I pulled on to the scale and the weigh master said, “you are good flatbed. I’m going to weigh the Cadillac behind you.” It was so foggy and the Cadillac so close I didn’t know it was there.

I drafted off a truck for more than 300 miles in my Suburban it saved me $$$. But I asked him first. We communicated with each other using CB radio. He let me know what he was doing before he did it. I bought him lunch at Bucky’s for his effort.

retired trucker. Had that happen many times, even did it myself when I was younger and thought invincible. They are drafting like Nascar drivers, riding the wind vacuum behind you. Never concerned myself when folks did that, my rear bumper was 53 feet thick. "You want to drive with one hand on the wheel and one hand on your Bible? Your choice." That's what I thought of it.

I yanked the trailer brakes and locked em up on a dude doing this...dash cam or not there were no brake lights on my end and as he got over to get off the interstate I kept going. never heard anything about it. not a single fuckin peep. was a new f150 too...

I’ve done it, picked up 4-5mpg’s at 75mph. Multiply 5x25, well that’s an extra 125 miles for the tank. Thats 20 bucks for my family of 4!! Jet2 Holiday here I come !!!

Semi’s have a very long braking distance at hwy speeds especially when loaded and they usually keep a very good distance from vehicles so you generally have time to stop if ur paying attention

It’s called drafting. I’ve done it before. Pounded across three states on a half tank of gas. ⛽️ you eliminate the resistance of the air push and you get GREAT gas mileage. But. You have to pay attention. Especially if the truck gets tired of you riding him and grabs an exit to get rid of you. Kills the mood a little.

I used to draft semis when riding long distances on my motorcycle during the 70's. I had a CB so would get in touch with the driver first then stay off to the side so he could see me in his mirror and me a view of the road ahead. I stopped doing that after a truck I was drafting jackknifed. I had pulled off to eat something at a Denny's and was waiting on my order when state troopers flew by. Was back on the road 45 minutes later and rode by his wrecked rig that was 3 miles past the exit. I would've been caught up in that mess if I didn't stop to eat.
