His name was Larry Walters he was an American truck driver who achieved international fame on July 2, 1982, for a 45-minute flight in a lawn chair attached to 42 (some sources say 45) helium-filled weather balloons. When the tether was cut, Walters didn't rise slowly; he rapidly shot to an altitude of over 16,000 feet. The chair drifted into the controlled airspace of Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), where commercial pilots spotted him. He landed after his balloons became entangled in power lines in Long Beach, causing a brief local blackout. The Aftermath: He was immediately arrested by the LAPD and later fined $1,500 by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for operating an unregistered aircraft. Walters' chair was eventually donated to the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum. He later died by suicide in 1993.
