Without capital you can not build anything. Slave economics is that simple. They not only worked on farms and cleared land (free labor is an asset ) but some were trained craftsmen (in New Orleans much of the French quarter was built by slaves many of whom were trained bricklayers and carpenters as just one example). And if slaves were not essential to the economy why did each southern state say the reason for the war was to maintain the economic benefits of slavery.
