I have fond memories of homemade halvah! At camp, my bf got a care package from home. And in it was a fabulous halvah, made by her mom. Being silly young things, we grabbed it and ran into the woods to devour it. So, we ate it and ate it and ate the whole big tin full. And we were happy-- until we got back in our cabin and had a huge stomach ache from this very rich desert! The counselors, not knowing our gluttony , thought we were sick. And after running to the outhouse a couple times, we were miraculously healed by morning! Did we regret it? NO! I can still taste that delicious halvah!
For the curious this is İrmik helvası, semolina halva, or semolina dessert. It is a traditional Turkish dessert made from semolina, butter, and a syrup of sugar, water, or milk. Halva is often includes pine nuts and is flavored with cinnamon or vanilla. It is traditionally made for various life events, including religious holidays, weddings, births, and funerals, and shared with family and friends. It can be served warm or cold, and in the summer, it is often enjoyed with Turkish ice cream (dondurma).

While in elementary school I had a friend whose father was in the Italian embassy in DC. Our treat after school was a slice of HELVA. So good! The cook would also mix up a raw egg yolk, mixed with cocoa and a bit of milk. Tha too was very good 🌸
