They can be ornery when they feel you've been gone too long. I was gone for 6 weeks in hospital and rehabilitation and one of my 6 cats that I am closest to has passed at me from the morning I came home till late that night before he would come out if hiding. The other 5 were waiting for me on my bed and showed their delight in my return. Smokey, my all black cat hid from me and wouldn't come yo me till about 3am and hung on me all night afterward like he was afraid I'd leave again. He's my constant companion.
