This painting transports us to an ink-washed midsummer: in the pavilion, ladies ponder over a chess game in quiet contemplation, while by the pond, a maiden fishes in serene repose. Lush lotus leaves spread across the water, willow tendrils sway gently, and silk garments flutter softly in the breeze. The women wear their hair in low chignons, adorned with delicate crowns, and are dressed in narrow-sleeved ruqun, exuding an air of elegant refinement. Their tranquil demeanor transcends mere physical beauty, reflecting the restrained and profound elegance cherished in literati aesthetics. A pavilion, a lotus pond, a game of chess, and a moment of fishing—where movement and stillness converge, embodying the essence of Eastern aesthetics. The brushwork is delicate, the coloring refined, and the figures gracefully poised. "Ladies Playing Chess and Fishing by Lotus Pavilion" , a Song dynasty replica attributed to the Five Dynasties (Southern Tang) painter Zhou Wenju. Ink and color on silk, currently housed in the National Palace Museum in Taipei.
