My Dad was an artillery spotter and radio operator for a while during WWII. He told us about a particular event, but I never put it together until after he passed at age 93. I found a citation among his war souvenirs detailing the instance during the Battle of Anzio. He was on a hilltop, calling in artillery strikes. The citation noted how he endured heavy fire for some time while he kept calling in positions. He remained at his post until the radio was destroyed by the blast from an enemy artillery shell, which also severely wounded his leg. Somehow he survived it. It's what got him his Bronze Star. What has become obvious to me over the years is that actions like that were commonplace among those men.

As someone mentioned They were the greatest generation. Its so sad that there are fewer of them every day and most of the people in this country have no clue as to what they did. We need to go back to teaching or history and how it made this country. We need to stop eradicating our history just because some of it was not to their liking. Good or bad, our history needs to be remembered.
