That tree wanted a drink and got one. We had a tree that was planted right by the sewer line in the front yard and it choked the line with roots like that.

Damn that's been a problem for a while now, I'm surprised they're just now having to fix it as bad as that is.

Yes indeed tree roots will grow threw those pipes and cause great damage. My apartment is on garden level and been have this serious problem from the huge tree that the roots have invaded mainly in the pipes by my portion of. Talking with the guy who come periodically knows, yet my landlord doesn't comprehend if it's not taken care of it will progress. We can see where the roots invaded the sidewalk leading towards upwards to portion of level of my garden apartment window. I periodically have it clean out as it leads to my kitchen window. Guess by saying it's like putting on a bandaid to pump the sink to unclog works but not well. No strong chemicals will I ever use just basic to unclog my sink .Can say if his mom was still alive she would have taken care of it. Plus outside the sewer catch hasn't been cleaned out for 6 or 7 years.

tree roots are the worst when you own a home have the pipes video taped to see if there's a problem before you buy a house I learned that pretty quick.
