A would-be robber would think twice about committing a crime when he/she sees the Sheriff's vehicle. Could be 2 or more deputies around. AND, his department may allow or encourage them doing so.

It’s common practice in many agencies. It gives the perception there are more patrol units working and they’re actually are. It is meant to provide an additional layer of security and a feeling of safety to the citizens. In addition when utilizing their patrol vehicle off duty, they are required to be armed and act on any criminal activity they witness while off duty. It is also considered part of your pay package. It’s called a benefit. Similar to health insurance, life insurance, etc..

Where I live some police officers by their own police vehicle sad but true. I’m sure the city reimburses them somehow but they are literally the police officers vehicle so they do go home with them at night. I personally wouldn’t do that because it’s dangerous for police officers especially for people to know exactly where you live but that’s what goes on up here.

they frequently take vehicles home with them. This is one person, possibly meeting his family but not toting his family around in it. Totally acceptable. My dad used to bring his car home with him when he was a deputy.
