I was just there and saw this ancient woman who was walking hunched over, resting on her cane, begging for money. A couple minutes later she realized her friend was being taken away in a cop car. She dropped the cane and turned into Carl Lewis chasing after that cop car, and from somewhere pulled out her cellphone. Very surreal moment.

I heard from an American who lived in Italy for 5 years. She told us that the Gypsies were horrible. Stole everything in sight. Would use a very sharp razor blade to cut a hole in bags and follow picking up anything that fell out onto the ground. Be aware of your surroundings and the people around you. Happen to my Father in law and he gave me a jacket that had saved everything in his bag. Except my leather jacket. Knife was so sharp it went through two sides of my jacket.

Pickpockets don't go to jail in Europe. They're released same day if arrested. Once released they go right back to work pick pocketing. They may have show trial with jail sentence but it is rare exception. I guess police don't want to expend resources chasing endless problem. Maybe politicians see women Romanian gypsies, who make up most pickpockets, as a protected victim group. Gypsy gangs control most of this business and bosses live in gaudy mansions in Romania. Some EU governments post warnings to visiting Americans not to get violent with them. Police would likely arrest Americans fighting back and not the pickpockets. 👍
