I used to press apple cider for FFA in high school to raise money for the club; the press was manual and an antique; the Agricultural teacher who ran that chapter of FFA recruited the three highest rated weightlifters in Sigma club to hand-press the whole apples. I was second, but I stuck to the task; I processed the apple mash three cycles and produced three extra bottles of cider. Luckily, one of the girls scooped the dry mash and took it off to her horses so I could reload the press. Yes, after the first round, the mash looked like dreck, but it produced the best cider I've ever tasted. It was a mix of red delicious and granny Smith, Fuji, and oddly enough, dwarf crabapples.
