Hey man, how old is this child? At this age, he figured that out all by himself you better get him that toy period. He's already smarter than half the children twice his age I guarantee it. Plus if you didn't then you should watch out he will remember and probably won't trust you to keep your word again and crafty as he is you probably don't want him angry and feeling betrayed.
